2006 The Outstanding JROTC Cadet Award

The above photograph shows Kristen Briggs at the SVSAR Chapter Meeting of February 18, 2006 honoring us with a reading her
winning essay for the 2005 George S. & Stella M. Knight Essay Contest. After the reading, Compatriot Richard Knock, SVSAR
Scholarship Committee member, presented to Kristen The George S. & Stella M. Knight Essay Contest Certificate, and Compatriot
Charles A. Smart, SVSAR President, presented to Kristen the NSSAR Bronze Good Citizenship Medal and Certificate. Kristen will be
matriculating at Reed College in the fall of 2006.

This contest was originally named in honor of NSSAR Compatriot President Calvin Coolidge who won an SAR essay contest while a
student at Amherst. The contest was reestablished in 1988 by Compatriot McCarthy DeMere. In 1995, the contest was renamed the
George S. and Stella M. Knight Essay Contest in honor of their generous gift to the NSSAR to support this contest. The contest is
designed to give high school students an opportunity to explore events that shaped American History.
The NSSAR Bronze Good Citizenship Medal is awarded to individuals who have attained noteworthy achievements in their school,
community, or state. It can be presented by the National, State Societies or Chapters.

2005 The George S. & Stella M. Knight Essay Contest

The Outstanding JROTC Cadet award includes the NSSAR Bronze Presentation Medallion on a neck ribbon, the Bronze Star to wear on
the medal ribbon drape, the Bronze Frame for the ribbon bar, and the Certificate. Cadet Jose Arteaga was selected the Outstanding
JROTC Cadet from twelve (12) JROTC high school programs.
In 1997, the President General of SAR authorized the enhancement of the JROTC program. The SVSAR chapter now selects an
Outstanding JROTC Cadet from twelve (12) JROTC programs, and enters that Cadet into the CASSAR Outstanding JROTC Cadet
program. The winner of the State competition will be entered into the NSSAR Outstanding JROTC Cadet program. The winner of the
NSSAR program will receive a special award at the SAR's National Congress.
The NSSAR award is to be presented to the Outstanding JROTC Cadet in their next to last year of JROTC, a third year Cadet as a
junior in the 11th grade, in a four year program. For a two year JROTC program, a Second Year Cadet may be selected.
