CORY McCARTHY

Mr. Cory McCarthy honored us with a reading of his winning essay for the 2005 SVSAR Scholarship.  After the reading, Compatriot
Howard Peters, Chairman of SVSAR Scholarship Committee, presented Mr. McCarthy with the SVSAR Scholarship award of $500.00,
the American Flag, which was flown over the United States Capital, and the Flag Certificate.  Compatriot Charles A. Smart, SVSAR
President, awarded Mr. McCarthy the Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition from the office of Congresswoman Anna Eshoo,
and the NSSAR Bronze Good Citizenship Medal and Certificate.

Update:  In the 2004/2005 Academic Year, Mr. McCarthy won the Scholarship for Veterans ($333) as well as the SVSAR Scholarship
($500).  In the 2005/2006 Academic Year, Cory won the California History Scholarship ($500), the Rutner Family Scholarship ($1,000),
the President's Award ($2,000), and the Scholarship for Veterans ($1,000).

FILIP NOWAK

Mr. Filip Nowak also honored us with a reading of his winning essay for the 2004/2005 SVSAR Scholarship.  After the reading,
Compatriot Howard M. Peters, Chairman of SVSAR Scholarship Committee, presented Mr. Nowak with the SVSAR Scholarship award
of $300.00, the American Flag, which was flown over the United States Capital, and the Flag Certificate.   Compatriot Charles A. Smart,
SVSAR President, awarded Mr. Nowak the Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition from the office of Congresswoman Anna
Eshoo, and the NSSAR Bronze Good Citizenship Medal and Certificate.

Update:  In the 2004/2005 Academic Year, Mr. Nowak won the SVSAR Scholarship ($300), the De Anza Student Body (DASB) Full Time
Student Scholarship ($500), and the Foothill De Anza Board of Trustees Scholarship ($1,000).  In the 2005/2006 Academic Year, Filip
won the Caroline Keen Literature Prize ($50),  the Carolee Eriksson Inter Club Council Scholarship ($500), the De Anza Student Body
(DASB) 4.0 Student Scholarship ($500), the Epstein Family Scholarship for History ($500), the Obenour Student Athlete Scholarship
($500), the Governor's Scholarship (1,000), and the A. Robert Dehart Memorial Scholarship for Service ($2,000).  In 2005, Filip was the
Coast Conference Champion in the 200 Yard Breaststroke, and in 2006 Filip was named the De Anza Scholar Athlete of the Year.  For
matriculation in the fall of 2006 Filip has accepted offers from the Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley,
and from Stanford University.  He will make a decision in mid August

JOHN K. SWENSSON

John K. Swensson is the Dean of the Language Arts Division, and a teacher of English, and Business.  He took his undergraduate
degree in Engineering at the United States Military Academy at West Point.  After two tours of duty in Viet Nam, he took a graduate
degree in English at the University of Virginia, and later, a graduate degree in Business Systems from the University of Northern
Colorado.  This latter degree was taken via distance learning and also used collaborative learning within the cohort of graduate students
with whom he was studying.  A retired army officer, he has lived in Asia, Europe, and Africa.  He has extensive experience in Sales and
Marketing, including Internet marketing, and has also cowritten and coproduced a Hollywood movie, FIRE BIRDS, starring Nicolas
Cage, Tommy Lee Jones, and Sean Young.  He is a past president of the De Anza College Faculty Senate, and frequently takes good
students overseas.  He is currently the Dean of the Language Arts Division, and taking care of his 186 faculty.


SVSAR SCHOLARSHIP

The SVSAR Scholarship is an extraordinary SVSAR Chapter recognition program designed for a De Anza College student who
embodies the qualities of knowledge, goals, service and leadership.  In order to enter the competition for the SVSAR Scholarship, the
student must submit two documents: 1) personal qualifications/biography, and 2) an essay entitled “Why I am proud to be an
American”.  The Candidates are screened by the De Anza College English Department based on the students' essays.  Five students are
selected, and their essays and personal qualifications/biographies are then given to the SVSAR Scholarship Committee for the selection
of the winner(s).

The NSSAR Bronze Good Citizenship Medal is awarded to individuals who have attained noteworthy achievements in their school,
community, or state.  It can be presented by the National, State Societies or Chapters.
